The auto shows for CES and Detroit have opened up boundaries of imaginations of future technology. Motor companies eagerly showed off their fully autonomous car technology. The Mercedes-Benz auto show held in Las Vegas featured its F015 while Chevrolet, Buick, Hyundai, Volkswagen and Infiniti had their concepts displayed in Motown.
These predictions can be backed up by the choice of cars consumers prefer when doing their shopping as recorded in the Kelley Blue Book. Science fiction automotive technologies may become a reality in less than a decade. By2020, the following technologies may no longer be fiction but incorporated into vehicles.
1. Autonomous Cars
This one can be ticked off the list. In the next five years, consumers are going to have cars that can drive on their own. However, this is not to say that the cars would be fully autonomous because it will require more to have a car that can drive itself all the time, anywhere with no human oversight soon. Nevertheless, it’s certain that there will be vehicles that can move on their maybe in rural areas that lack much road details to adhere to.
2. Driver Override Systems
It’s closely related to autonomous cars but not the same thing. An override system is whereby a car can ignore your command and make a decision on its own. Cars that can stop if you delay or fail to apply brakes when needed back up this. In 2020, there may be cars that will refuse to break even if you press the brake pedal as long as it’s risky to do so.
3. Use of Biometric Technology to Access a Car
This is evident because there used to be a key for accessing and starting a car, now both processes are keyless. With the high rate of technological advancement, engineers predict that drivers are going to enter and start cars using fingerprints or retina scanners. However, by 2020, fingerprints are more likely to be incorporated in car access systems than retina scanners. The same concept is used in cell phones.
4. Comprehensive Vehicle Tracking
It’s already a debate among car insurance companies and state governments to charge for miles driven. This is in the sense that people who have subscribed to full behavior tracking will pay less. Those who have not will pay more. By 2020, this may be fully implemented. However, many people may wish the technology to be made voluntary.
5. Active Vehicle Window Display
The dim and washed out green digits projected on some cars is likely to come in more technological by 2020. By this time, the active glasses may be able to display road related vibrant images. The images are going to be more navigation-related with details such as a vehicle showing you its next turn when you approach it.
6. Remote Vehicle Shutdown
This technology is actually in place already. There are already hundreds of cars cracked down by Telematics Company just by simply shutting them down remotely to end long police chases. In a few years time, it’s no longer going to be news. Instead, it will be a conscious and ordinary operation in the society.
7. Driver Health Monitoring
Ford Motor Company has hinted about this technology. The seatbelts and steering wheel can be equipped with sensors that collect health statistics, which will wirelessly connect to devices like a mobile phone. If this technology is combined with autonomous car technology, a vehicle will be able to pull over, and alert paramedics in case the driver loses consciousness.
8. Four Cylinder Super-fast Cars
This is another way that Ford is tapping into technology by use of their twin turbo V6. Imagine a V6 hitting 600 horsepower! The automobile manufacturer has hinted that there will be a full-fledged supercar with the capability of going up to 200+ mph with a four-cylinder engine shortly.
9. Smart Vehicle Marketing
People can get social media ads based on their behavior. By 2020, expect to be driving a car that will be wired to the internet. Your car is going to be feeding marketers with statistics on how to tailor their messages. Let’s hope that this feature comes as an option for convenience purposes.
10. Transformable Body Parts
Sci-fi fans would love to see, let alone drive, a real life transformer vehicle. The need to have both an SUV and Truck is likely going to be met by 2020. Hopefully, SUVs will be able to transform some parts and become a truck when need be and get back to being an SUV at the owners discretion.
A greater percentage of these technologies still have a long way to actualize. However, others are too close to hitting the roads. Some may even be in showrooms this moment being worked on. The rate at which technology is sweeping the personal transportation sector is so fast that predictions can be made on when to expect the arrival of a future car technology.
